There is something with me and bass instruments, once again listening to ABC Classic FM drive program hearing Renaud García Fons… mind blown and a new love.
Let’s start with a grab from reviewer – Raul da Gama (Jun 2, 2012) latinjazznet.com
In the beginning there was the contrabass. Then came the men who revolutionized it: In one world these were men such as Domenico Dragonetti and Serge Koussevitsky and a slew of others including Francois Rabbath, godfather to the modern chamber bass Joel Quarrington and others.
From another world came Jimmy Blanton, who begat Charles Mingus who begat a slew of others from Scott Lafaro to Red Mitchell; even perhaps Jeff Sarli and others…
Then came Renaud García-Fons, who melded all of this together, swathing it all in the diaphanous gown of a whirling dervish and a man who, setting out from the Mediterranean to the world of everything from flamenco to the voices of the Romani of Hungary and elsewhere. García-Fons the great bassist who would claim origins from Catalonia and France and who then spread his wings so wide that he flew, metaphorically, touching the ends of the world.
I heard the music with all those influences and definitely hit a nerve, by some great luck the 2012 Melbourne International Jazz Festival had Renaud performing twice, solo at Bennetts Lane and then at the Recital Center.
The first concert was at the Bennetts Lane. Renaud García-Fons picked up his instrument and beguiled us with any and every known technique, including paper in between the strings! He mesmerised us in the audience. A virtuoso in every way. The week before, Prince was at Bennetts Lane and called him ‘The Paganini of the bass’.
The next concert a few more friends came along on my recommendation and when he started playing and bouncing/slapping his French bow on the strings, a few were left with their mouths wide open in amazement, not just a virtuoso but music that moved our souls.
I picked this live album here a ‘solo’ concert where he employs the harmonics of delays, loops and other devices sounding like he has multiple instruments playing. All the sounds you hear are generated by him and his own designed five stringed double bass.
Beautiful and beguiling music – also many more albums in his catalogue to choose from.
Enjoy.
