Talk low, talk slow and don’t say too much.” – John “Duke” Wayne

As journeys go this album can quickly put you in the middle of a border area between Mexico and the USA on a horse and most likely in a long-forgotten god-forsaken place.

It certainly isn’t country music in the commercial sense. It’s about country and the spirit it can evoke. It can be in a modern or vintage context. The story is told for you to interpret in your own way.

Black Pudding is a collaboration between Mark Lanegan of the Screaming Trees and Duke Garwood an English multi-instrumentalist whose work is mostly blues infused. The album can be found on Discogs.

Critical reviews of Lanegan and Garwood from a lot of sources are all in accordance their work is worth listening to.

Garwood’s instrumentation carries an immersive, introspective quality that once again provides an excellent balance for Lanegan’s affecting intonations.
– Record Collector Magazine ★★★★

They conjure a languidly nocturnal atmosphere that’s as claustrophobic as it is intoxicating… A true meeting of minds, and one that’s deeply affecting throughout
– Q Magazine ★★★★

An absorbing affair… A journey into a murky sound–world of spectres and sorrows… It’s chilling, atmospheric and, at times, haunting.” – Financial Times

Titled ‘Black Pudding’, the 12 track album was recorded at Pink Duck Studios in Burbank, California by Justin Smith (Tegan & Sara, The Hives) and mixed by Lanegan’s Queens of the Stone Age associate Alain Johannes.

For those who are unfamiliar with Garwood, he has been described in the UK press as Lanegan’s “spiritual cousin across the Atlantic waters.” In fact, Lanegan had the following fine words to share about his latest musical partner.

Duke Garwood is one of my all-time favourite artists. Working with him has been one of the best experiences of my recording life.
