    The Journey

    Il Viaggio means “The Journey” in Italian. As we enter into the closing part of 2023, it’s a time for contemplation and allowing the “dust to settle”.

    A fellow music traveller and mate GJ from The Netherlands sent me the introduction to Melanie De Biasio’s Il Viaggio album. As we share a common passion for Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’s collaborations, this recommendation was quickly accessed. His taste as always is impeccable!

    Over the last few months at home for relaxation we’ve been enjoying the journey of another traveller Martijn Doolaard (also from The Netherlands) who has documented his time in the Italian Alps rebuilding an ancient stone cottage which had fallen into disrepair.

    This is a slow gentle exploration with sparse commentary but beautiful visuals (Martijn knows how to frame a shot). If you allow the process to unfold it can be an enjoyable partnership to see him overcome the challenges of being remote and rebuilding something of value.

    In contrast Melanie Di Biasio’s work is normally associated with Jazz but she has expressed more gothic interests in interviews. Her grandparents made a tough journey from their homeland in Italy to her birthplace in Belgium.

    In writing it was expressed “ll Viaggio was born from an awakened emotional memory. It offers a quest for musical, physical, and spiritual renewal. With a combination of concrete and ambient, this album drifts between the natural sounds of daily life and a dreamlike, imagined world.”

    Listening to this album immediately made me visualise the alpine landscape and rolling meadows portrayed in Martijn’s project.

    I’ve sent the album to another friend DB in Ohio USA who has recently lost his mother and was a “mensch” in providing support in the waning months. This album could help in times of contemplation and the need to reduce stress.

    Whatever the form of renewal takes – music can help us on our relative journey and journeys.
